OCTAVIA BOULEVARD HOUSING
A building on the corner of the new Octavia Boulevard and Market must work socially, symbolically, culturally and commercially to heal a key intersection. To provide a sense of a gateway to the city, we have provided an architecture that is rooted in San Francisco’s architectural traditions and combines this traditionalism with a syncretic multiculturalism. Therefore we have included features which are typically San Franciscan, such as bay windows, but have developed and extended these features. This project tries to extend the complexity of the relationship between public and private. The south part of the building consists of artists studios. What we have tried to do is reproduce the arrangements of the Hunters Point shipyard studios, and bring that cultural excitement to the center of the city. Artists have been pushed to the peripheries of San Francisco, and need to be brought back to the center of town. The southeast corner of this part of the building is a two story gallery space lit by the dramatic four story bay window.
